The Holidays Do Not Need To Be Scary

Hot chocolate. Snow. Thanksgiving. Friends. Christmas. Gingerbread. Fires.

What is not to love about the holidays? Many people can not name anything. Maybe just spending a lot of money on gifts? (DIY/handmade gifts are a great option!) But really and honestly there is not anything more exciting and thrilling than the holiday season rolling around.

Expect one thing.

The fear of food for those suffering with an eating disorder. It is hard to eat out, or around people to begin with so throwing in the holiday party? A HUGE no thank you.

The holidays can be scary, but they do not have to be.

But as the years go on you find things that help your particular needs during the holidays.

Here are my top tips for conquering the Holidays with an ED or even if you have a particular diet.

1. Do not skip breakfast or lunch in fear of eating too much later. Your body needs the nutrients to push through the day and keep the metabolism going. Make sure you are getting enough calories!

2. Go for a morning walk or run! Exercising the morning of a big family party during the holidays is a great way to start the day. This can tackle and fight some of the stress you may have. Moving your body is a great stress-reliever.

3. Bring your own dish! Baking or cooking your own dessert or side dish can help prevent not knowing what foods will be at the event. This way you have a safe option if nothing is appealing to you or if something is a fear food.

4. Step away from the dinner table if you need to take a second. Your mental health is more important. Take a breather in the bathroom!

5. Have a friend on speed dial that knows. Being able to text a friend you need them is so important and they can help guide you.

6. If you end up binging or purging. It is okay. The holidays are scary and sometimes it is hard to contain yourself when surrounded by so many people and especially people that do not know. You can move on from it and continue your goals to recovery right after. Keep moving.

You are so strong. Unbelievably strong. Holidays can not stop you from pushing yourself towards your goals of recovery. I have faith in you. You have faith in yourself. As you conquer one holiday, soon all the holidays will be conquered. Soon you can start making memories from them. They will be special again.

You got this.
